Abstract
Medical work in sub-Saharan Africa is a tropical medical challenge, placing elevated demands on the team’s physical and psychological abilities, including knowledge on the political, economic and social conditions of this continent, especially against the background of the colonial past of European powers in Africa.
In view of the statistics on illness, death and insufficient patient care in Africa, questions on health care inevitably take on political dimensions. A short outline of the history and socio-economic conditions in sub-Saharan Africa illustrates these connections.
