It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to share with the readers of The Journal of Knee Surgery some of my favorite topics in musculoskeletal radiology. I have been a musculoskeletal radiologist for nearly 25 years, and I still find my days interesting and challenging. My two greatest interests are mechanisms of injury and cartilage imaging, both of which can easily be applied to the knee joint. We will review common injuries patterns such as bone contusions following anterior cruciate ligament failure as well as more rare entities like friction syndromes and dislocation of the knee joint. Although magnetic resonance imaging is the dominant modality in this series, an in-depth review of the lateral radiograph of the knee is also included. Finally, we will look into the “dark side” of cartilage, a relatively common but often underappreciated cartilage finding.

I would like to thank Drs. James Stannard and James Cook for providing me with the opportunity to participate in this project. I am hopeful readers find these articles interesting, thought-provoking, and a useful reference for daily practice.
