The Use of Computer Based Diaries for the Assessment of Subjective Symptomatology

Better methods are needed to evaluate the therapy of diseases which are subject to frequent fluctuation in the intensity of symptoms and lack an objective measurement reflecting the disease state. A patient diary system is reported in which patient symptomatology is collected and the data computerized. The system provides for management and automated tabulation of large volumes of data. It has proved to be a successful way to obtain the detailed symptomatology data necessary to assess therapeutic regimens in hay fever clinical studies.

Für Krankheiten, die häufigen Schwankungen in der Intensität der Symptome tinterliegen und bei denen ein objektiver Maßstab nicht angelegt werden kann, sind bessere Methoden zur Bewertung der Therapie erforderlich. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird über ein Patienten-Tagebuch-System berichtet, bei dem die Symptome der Patienten gesammelt und die Daten im Computer verarbeitet werden. Das System ermöglicht die Verwaltung und automatische Tabellierung großer Datenmengen. Es hat sich bewährt als ein erfolgreicher Weg zur Erstellung von detaillierten Symptomenbildern, die für die Beurteilung therapeutischer Behandlungsformen bei klinischen Heufieberstudien erforderlich sind.
