Summary

In the last decades we observed a rising incidence of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer in the population in Europe and the United States of America. UV-light is undisputed the most important risk factor in the pathogenesis of these malignancies. Besides carcinogenesis UV exposure induces skin aging and local immune suppression. On the other hand UV-light has positive effects on the metabolism of vitamin D, serotonine and melatonine. Due to insufficient endogenous protection of the skin in the fair skinned population protection against UV-light is obligatory. Besides classical sunscreen via clothing and physical/chemical topicals innovative local and systemic drugs are currently under investigation. There is an increased sensitivity to UV-light in childhood. Additionally, substantial parts of the cumulative UV-light exposure and sunburns are acquired in childhood and adolescence. In this vulnerable period sunscreen is therefore mandatory, and is an investment for the future both from a medical and socioeconomic point of view.
