Summary
The STIKO (german vaccination council) of the Robert Koch institute has recommended a general vaccination programme against varicella by summer 2004. This decision has fueled the debate regarding vaccinations in Germany, especially as health insurance companies have refused to generally reimburse patients for the costs of the vaccination. Pediatricians are now facing the problem of convincing parents of the benefits of a vaccination against a disease generally considered as “harmless”. The following review presents basic information regarding the disease and concomitant complications as well as the vaccine and its usage in complex cases.
