Double blind randomized control study on the efficacy of homeopathic medicine in obesity

Aim:

To identify the efficacy of homeopathic drugs in the treatment of obesity. The role of diet and exercise in the management of obesity.

Methodology:

Study setting:

  • project site – A Delhi Government aided homeopathic dispensary

  • number of cases – 60

  • duration of study – 1.5 year

  • procuring of medicines – OPD (out patient department) dispensary

  • body fat and weight analysis – digital weighing scale

  • hip and waist ratio – measuring tape

Study design: Experimental study – Randomized double blind controlled trial.

Selection of cases: random sampling method. Cases of age 15 – 60yrs, both sexes and different occupation.

Inclusion criteria:

  • Patient having bad life style with BMI more than 23.5 (asian standards) were included, who are under no medication except D.M and hypertension with age group 15 – 50yrs.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • obesity due to known other pathology like PCOD, Cushing syndrome etc.

  • thyroid disorders

  • patients who discontinued treatment up to 4 – 6 visits were dropped out of the study

Diagnostic criteria:

  • detailed case taking was done according to Hahnemanian method with special reference to common symptoms of obesity

  • a case taking and lifestyle proforma was especially designed for the study

  • laboratory investigation – blood analysis with special reference to lipid profile

  • body fat composition

  • blood pressure

  • dietary advice

  • exercise advice

  • psychological support
