Heterotheca inuloides Cass. is a plant widely used in Mexican traditional medicine known as árnica mexicana, among many local names. The infusion of dried flowers has been used for the treatment of painful conditions associated with anti-inflammatory processes [1]. Flavonoids, sterols, triterpenes and cadinane-type sesquiterpenes have been isolated as the major constituents from this species, some of which display anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiparasitic properties [2, 3]. Here we report the structure of two new seco-cadinanes (1 and 2), the characterization of different populations of H. inuloides by HPLC, and the activities of natural (3) and semisynthetic (4-16) cadinanes against Helicobacter pylori and some selected tumor cell lines. The results indicated distinctions in the relative abundance and structural variety of cadinanes in different populations, and that some compounds displayed clear anti-H. pylori and antiproliferative properties against several tumor cell lines.
