Die multiparametrische MRT-Bildgebung mit Diffusions- und Perfusionsbildgebung sowie MR-Angiografie (das sog. „Schlaganfall-MRT“) hat Mitte der 90er-Jahre die Schlaganfallbildgebung revolutioniert. Die neuen Möglichkeiten der Charakterisierung der Gewebsveränderungen bei zerebraler Ischämie haben dazu beigetragen, das Verständnis der Pathophysiologie des ischämischen Hirninfarkts zu verbessern und pathophysiologisch basierte Therapiekonzepte zu entwickeln. Neben der wissenschaftlichen Anwendung hat die MRT-Bildgebung auch unmittelbar Eingang in der klinischen Routinediagnostik gefunden.
