Intraoral biofilms on orthodontic appliances endanger the structural integrity of oral hard and soft tissues. Identification of oral biofilms can be performed chemically by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and morphologically by scanning electron microscopy by means of secondary electron microscopy (SE) and Rutherford-Backscattering-Detection (RBSD).

Predilection sites of biofilm accumulation can be identified by the above-mentioned methods under in-vivo conditions and information for surface functionalisation and shape optimisation and can be derived.
