Opening Letter for Twin–Twin Transfusion Syndrome Monograph

On June 15, 2013 all North American fetal centers actively involved in the treatment of twin–twin transfusion syndrome were invited to Houston to discuss the advances in the treatment of this disease. Dick Oepkes, MD, of Leiden University in Leiden, Belgium was an international guest invited to share his special expertise on twin anemia-polycythemia sequence.

The symposium was sponsored by Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, the Texas Fetal Center, and the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UTHealth Medical School.

Overall 50 representatives from 13 fetal centers attended the symposium including physicians, nurses, sonographers, and lay representatives. Physicians at various centers were asked to make brief presentations on select topics. This was followed by robust discussion during which members of other centers shared their experiences and wisdom.

This monograph is a summation of the lectures that were presented at this symposium.

I thank all participants for their willingness to meet to improve the care of the women who experience this, once devastating complication, of twin pregnancy.
