Summary

Is sitting a lethal activity?

The importance of physical activity as a fundamental pillar of health and well-being has been extensively documented. There is also sufficient evidence that at least moderate physical activity of about 150 minutes per week is likely to reduce the risk of most chronic diseases. However, epidemiological data shows that very few people reach this minimum requirement. Meanwhile, there is increasing evidence that the „antipode of physical activity“, the sitting time, has a tremendous risk for the development of chronic diseases and is therefore to be considered from a preventive perspective on the level of intervention. In the paper, the epidemiology of sedentary time, the state of research and the associated pathological mechanisms are presented.
