Dear Readers,

in the new year some of the professional leadership of Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound (UiM/EJU) will be passed on to new hands: Three internationally reputable experts for ultrasound in medicine, Fabio Piscaglia (Bologna/Italy), Paul Sidhu (London/United Kingdom) und Sevgi Tercanli (Basel/Switzerland), are to join the Board of Editors. Even with the new constellation of the Board of Editors, our goals will continue to be deeply rooted in the tradition of UiM/EJU. When speaking of ‘tradition’, a brief glance at some of the cornerstones in the journal’s history might be helpful. The journal has accompanied the development of the application of ultrasound in medicine for decades and has always been closely linked to the respective European specialist societies.

First published in the year 1980 with the founding editors Hans-Rudolf Müller (Basel/Switzerland), Emil Reinold (Vienna/Austria) und Gerhard Rettenmeier (Böblingen/Germany), UiM/EJU is now in its 34th publication year. Already at the time of its founding, the journal became the official journal of the ultrasound societies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Since the end of the 1990 s, all the members of these societies are subscribers of Ultraschall in der Medizin as well.

The year 2004 was extremely important for the further development of Ultraschall in der Medizin because it was chosen as the official journal of EFSUMB, thus becoming the European Journal of Ultrasound. This year marks nine successful years of cooperation with EFSUMB: Since the beginning of this cooperation many additional European ultrasound societies have joined our journal thus considerably expanding the audience. Today the choice of the publication language clearly pays tribute to the “European path” the journal has taken. Currently almost 90 % of the manuscripts submitted are written in English, with their origin mainly from within the European member societies of EFSUMB. The increased relevance of UiM/EJU is evidenced among others by the development of its Impact Factor (current Impact Factor 2011: 2.398) and at present the journal is the highest ranking interdisciplinary ultrasound journal worldwide.

In the course of the current year, Kurt Jäger will leave the Board of Editors at his own request. Kurt Jäger has been an editor of UiM since 1999 when he took the editorial leadership of the journal along with Gert Judmaier, Eberhard Merz und Karlheinz Seitz. He significantly promoted our collaboration with EFSUMB, of which he was president from 2002 to 2003. During the period of his work as an editor, Kurt Jäger has achieved much for our journal and the results of his successful work will remain apparent for a long time. For this we are most grateful to him and we wish him all the best for the future.

We know that the further editorial supervision of UiM/EJU is in safe hands. Still “on board” are Michael Bachmann Nielsen (Copenhagen/Denmark), Eberhard Merz (Frankfurt/Germany), Gerhard Mostbeck (Vienna/Austria) and Karlheinz Seitz (Sigmaringen/Germany). We feel very fortunate for having been able to additionally win over Fabio Piscaglia, Sevgi Tercanli and Paul Sidhu as new editors who will contribute their outstanding expertise in their respective areas of specialization and their experience from involvement in their national societies and EFSUMB to the further development of the journal. We wish the three new editors much enthusiasm and new ideas for the continuation of a major task in the service of ultrasound in medicine.

We wish our readers a stimulating and interesting read in the present issue and future issues of Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound.
