Significance

The syntheses of a new class of donor-acceptor poly(phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) based on pyromellitic diimide are described. The monomer was efficiently synthesized in four steps with minimal chromatography. The monomer was efficiently copolymerized with electron-rich acetylenes under standard Sonogashira-Hagihara conditions.
