Significance

An SBA-15-supported rhodium complex was prepared and found to promote the hydrothiolation of acetylenes with thiols. Thus, the hydrothiolation of phenylacetylene (2a) with thiophenol (3a) was carried out in the presence of the mesoporous silica-supported rhodium-phosphine complex, Rh-P-SBA-15 (1, 1.1 mol% Rh) to give phenyl styryl sulfide 4a in 87% conversion with 100% E-selectivity. Various acetylenes and olefins underwent the hydrothiolation under similar reaction conditions to give the corresponding products 4b-v in 62-98% conversion with 100% E-selectivity.
