Significance

Co(acac)2/DMPU is shown to be an efficient catalyst system for the ortho-alkylation of aromatic carboxamides and 2-phenylpyridine derivatives. Air is used as the only oxidant and the reaction proceeds smoothly at room temperature. Benzamides are common structural motifs in many natural products and bioactive compounds, and this protocol adds to the repertoire of C-H bond activation on benzamide derivatives.
