Significance

The oxidation of cyclooctane (1) proceeded in the presence of the metal-organic framework NHPI/Fe(BTC) (NHPI = N-hydroxyphthalimide; BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) to give cyclooctanone (2) and cyclooctanol (3) with 91% selectivity (corresponding to 2 + 3) and 28% conversion. The oxidation reactions of tetraline, n-octane, ethylbenzene, and propylbenzene were also carried out under similar conditions. A proposed reaction pathway for the present reaction is the chain reaction of the alkyl radical that is produced by in situ generated phthalimide N-oxyl radical.
