Significance

This work describes a radical-based approach to the synthesis of sterically congested bifluorene molecules mediated by cobalt(II) chloride. This simple strategy provides access to a diverse set of bifluorene compounds that can be further elaborated via bromination and subsequently be used as monomers in polymerization reactions.
