Significance

Donor-acceptor molecules based on 3-ethynyl-2H-cyclohepta[b]furan-2-one and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) were synthesized in good yields. [2+2] Cycloaddition and cycloreversion afforded a series of 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobutadienyl (TCBD) chromophores, which exhibit multistage reversible redox behavior and polyelectro-chromic property. Intramolecular charge transfer gives rise to absorption bands in the visible region.
