Significance

The Merrifield resin supported phenanthroline-Pd(II) complex was prepared and found to promote the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. Thus, the etherification of resin 1 and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2) followed by Schiff base condensation of the resulting resin 3 with 1,10-phenanthroline 4 gave the resin 5, which reacted with Pd(OAc)2 to afford the polymer-supported phenanthroline-Pd(II) complex 6. The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl bromide 7a with phenylboronic acid (8a) was carried out in the presence of the polymeric catalyst 6 to give 9a in 93% yield.
