Significance

Herein, a sequential aldol reaction of aldehydes with methyl ketones followed by rhodium- or palladium-catalyzed additions of arylboronic acids yielding β-substituted ketones is described. An asymmetric version of this reaction was achieved by using an optically active 1,1′-spirobiindane-7,7′-diol (SPINOL)-based phosphite ligand.
