Significance

Rhazinilam was isolated from Rhazya stricta, a desert shrub, and is a popular synthesis target. Some of the members of this family exhibit a similar biological profile to Taxol. Rhazinilam is active against various cancer cell lines in vitro, but unfortunately not in vivo. The structure is unusual due to the nine-membered lactam ring and the quaternary stereocenter linked to the C-2 position of the pyrrole.
