Significance

An iron-based metal-organic framework [Fe(BTC)] (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) catalyzed the ring opening of epoxides 1 with alcohols 2 or amines 3 to give the corresponding alcohols 4 in up to 93% GC yield (16 examples). In the reaction of styrene oxide with methanol, the catalyst was recovered by decantation and reused three times without significant loss of its catalytic activity (3rd reuse: 98% conversion). After the reaction, XRPD analysis revealed no change of the crystal structure of the catalyst.
