Significance

Multicomponent reactions can be efficiently used to build complex organic molecules from simple starting materials. A new nickel-catalyzed three-component coupling of alkynes, enones, and alkenyl boronic acids is described. The methodology allows the formation of 1,3-dienes in good to excellent yields and in a regio- and stereoselective fashion. Furthermore, the reaction works smoothly with acetylene gas as simple C2-building block.
