Significance

The authors use a photocatalytic C-H activation of ethers and sulfides to effect direct functionalization of [60] fullerene. This free-radical approach utilizes a decatungstate catalyst and a 300 W xenon lamp to achieve α-hydrogen abstraction. Functionalization proceeds in good yields and is complete within 30 minutes in most cases (1-8).
