Significance

Reported is the reductive cyclization of ω-nitro alkenes to dihydro benzothiazines, benzoxazines and quinolines using triphenylphosphine as the reductant and a molybdenum complex as the catalyst. The reaction is proposed to proceed through an ‘Alder-ene’ mechanism, which is supported by the absence of reaction in the case of terminal alkenes for which no ene reaction is possible.
