Significance

The authors report the synthesis and dual-mode switching behavior of 1, by combining the chirochromic switching of dibenzosuberene-derived helicenes (blue) and the photochromic switching behavior of azobenzenes (red). Compound 1 is able to reversibly and selectively photoisomerize between the four metastable states shown.
