Significance

Axially chiral biaryl moieties are common in natural products. The authors developed the first nickel-catalyzed asymmetric Ullmann coupling for substituted aryl halides to yield axially chiral biaryls, and applied this method to the formal synthesis of the natural product (+)-isoschizandrin.
