Significance

A Claisen-Schmidt condensation was performed with a metal-organic famework 3 [Fe(BTC), BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid]. Thus, the condensation of acetophenone (1) and benzaldehyde (2) was carried out with Fe(BTC) 3 (145 mol% Fe) in toluene at 110 ˚C to give chalcone (4) in 98% yield. The catalyst 3 was recovered and reused three times with a gradual decrease in activity.
