Significance

While several methods for the 1,2-addition of cyanide to ketones and imines exist, conjugate additions are less well-developed. The authors present an enantioselective conjugate addition of cyanide to diethylbenzylidene malonates in good yields and enantioselectivities. A highly modular titanium catalyst is used, which was previously explored in asymmetric 1,2-additions by Feng and co-workers (Chem. Eur. J. 2009, 15, 11642).
