Significance

The authors report a secondary amine catalyzed Michael-Michael cascade reaction of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes with conjugated β-keto esters. The products were obtained in good yields and high stereoselectivities. The provided reaction mechanism is in accordance with the one usually reported for related reactions, ­representing an iminium-ion-enamine-iminium-ion cascade process.
