Summary

Reflux-dependent inflammatory processes of the esophagus are always found in that part of the squamous epithelium-lined mucosa which borders on the cylindrical epithelium extending for a variable distance into the esophagus. Several examples demonstrate the histological topography of peptic stenoses of the esophagus whose localisation depends on the presence and extent of that segment of the esophagus which is lined with cylindrical epithelium. In the case of a columnar-lined esophagus, manometric investigations have shown that such a segment functions like an esophagus with a typical vestibulum.
