Summary
The most important indication for amnioscopy are toxaemia and suspected postmaturity. Meconic amniotic fluid and absence of amniotic fluid are positive amnioscopical findings. Local hypoxia of the intestines caused by O2-conserving adaptation of the fetal circulation results in discharge of meconium. Perinatal mortality of children of toxaemic mothers or mothers with suspected postmaturity has been considerably decreased by amnioscopy.
