Summary
The history of gastroscopy is characterized by different stages being represented
by the status of its technical equipment. The method using semi-flexible instruments
has long been abandonned. Even the up to now classical prototypes of fiberinstruments
are already out of date compared to the most modern fullflexible gastroscopes. Modern
gastroscopy requires fullflexible fiber instruments equipped with a bendable tip in
order to visualize the fornix region. To day there are no more “blind areas” in the
stomach. Better technical equipment now enables intragastric photography, biopsy under
vision and collection of material for cytological examinations.
Thus, the technical requirements for early diagnosis of gastric cancer are fulfilled.
