Abstract
The objective of the studies reported here was to investigate the effect of sheep β-LPH in the presence or absence of insulin on glucose utilization by rat adipose tissue. The epididymal fat pads were incubated separately for two hours in 2 ml of Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer (KRB) containing 20 mMoles of glucose and 1 mg /ml of gelatin, with or without: (a) insulin: 50 µU/ml.; (b) ovine β-LPH: 0.1, 1.0 and 100 µg/50 mg of tissue wet weight. The incorporation of glucose carbons into CO2 and fatty acids was measured. The results indicate that at a concentration of 1.0 Mg/50 mg of wet tissue, ovine β-LPH stimulates the oxidation of glucose and its incorporation into fatty acids by rat epididymal fat. The observed effect could be due to: (1) a direct action of β-LPH on glucose utilization: "insulin-like activity"; (2) an indirect effect mediated through potentiation of endogenous (and exogenous) insulin; (3) enhanced re-esterification of free fatty acids released by lipolysis.
