The Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome: Report of two Cases

Summary

The Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome consists of intermittent painful ophthalmoplegia resulting from a non-specific inflammatory process in the cavernous sinus and superior orbital fissure, which responds to steroid therapy.

We report two additional cases to the literature of the Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome and we are interested in pointing out the importance of orbital venography in the diagnosis of this syndrome.

Orbital venography demonstrates the partial occupation of the cavernous sinus and the lack of visualization of the 3rd segment of the superior ophthalmic vein.

Zusammenfassung

Das Tolosa-Hunt-Syndrom besteht aus einer intermittierenden schmerzhaften Ophthalmoplegie als Folge eines unspezifischen entzündlichen Prozesses im Bereich des Sinus cavernous und der Fissura orbitalis superior, die mit Steroidtherapie zu behandeln ist. Wir berichten zu den in der Literatur bekannten Fällen von Tolosa-Hunt-Syndrom über zwei zusätzliche Fälle, und weisen auf die Bedeutung der orbitalen Venographie für die Diagnose dieses Syndroms hin.

Die orbitale Venographie demonstriert die teilweise Verlegung des Sinus cavernosus und ein Fehlen des dritten Segmentes der V. ophthalmica superior.
