Significance

A synthesis for sulfur-bearing calixarenes (thiacalixarenes) is presented. Pre-ordering of the individual phenol units of the thiacalixarenes is achieved by covalent bonding to a pre-existent calixarene template. Other metal-templated synthetic approaches for this kind of heteracalixar­enes require a much more rigorous maintenance of reaction conditions in large-scale syntheses.
