Significance

Active catalysts for the addition of indoles to nitroalkenes have been developed. Quinolinium thioamide catalyst 1 gave products in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Comparison with thiourea-based catalyst 2 reveals a 280-fold effective rate acceleration achieved using catalyst 1, as well as a much higher enantioselectivity.
