Closely related polycyclic alkaloids have been isolated from different species of Nitraria (Zygophylaceae) and Myrioneuron (Rubiaceae). They feature an original lysine-derived metabolism with condensation of reactive C5 units as a pivotal scheme. Recent biomimetic investigations towards the total synthesis of alkaloids such as tangutorine [1] and myrioneurinol [2] are presented.
