Abstract

Gastric balloon therapy is currently discussed in a controverse manner. From our point of view, the technique is well established and allows an overall safe approach to induce weight loss under controlled conditions. We observed a reduction in all body fat compartments and a significant reduction in liver volume. These results should be substantiated by future studies and if these are successful, the judgment on gastric balloon therapy for obesity therapy may be changed to a more favourable opinion. For example, little is known about the behavior of gas bubbles within the balloon. For any future research, the correct conclusion on the indication (what is the goal of implanting the gastric balloon?), and the best technical performance during implantation are of outmost importance.
