2016 erhielt der Japaner Yoshinori Ohsumi den Nobelpreis für die Entdeckung der Mechanismen der Autophagie, des Selbstverdauungs- und Wiederverwertungsprozesses der Zellen. Dieser Mechanismus trägt dazu bei, das Gleichgewicht zwischen dem Abbau alter und der Produktion neuer Zellkomponenten herzustellen. Auch krankhafte oder krankmachende Strukturen, eingedrungene Bakterien und Viren werden so entsorgt. Eine fehlregulierte autophagische Aktivität kann umgekehrt zu einem zellulären Desaster führen und sich in unterschiedlichsten Krankheiten manifestieren.
