Classroom acoustics can influence the educational and psychosocial development of
school-aged children. Guidelines and standards for proper classroom acoustics have
been proposed to improve the classroom listening and learning environment. Effective
implementation of these guidelines and standards requires an understanding of the
complementary roles of the professionals most closely involved with ameliorating poor
acoustic conditions-the audiologist and the acoustic consultant. This article explains
in some detail the roles the audiologist and acoustic consultant are likely to play
in widespread implementation of acoustic guidelines and standards. Case studies are
presented to reinforce the synergistic nature of the responsibilities of the two professions.
