Significance

A silica gel (SBA-15)-supported acid/base catalyst 3 for the direct aldol reaction was developed. Thus, catalyst 3 was prepared from 2-(4-chlorosulfonylphenyl)ethyltrimethoxy­silane 1, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane 2, triblock copolymer P123, and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The direct aldol reaction of p-nitrobenzaldehyde (0.05 M) with acetone by using catalyst 1 (10 mol%) gave β-hydroxy ketone 4 (75% yield) and α,β-unsaturated ketone 5 (13%).
