Abstract

The effects of epimestrol and stilboestrol upon the release of FSH and LH and the respective releasing factors of the female rat were investigated. It was found that the i.v. injection of stilboestrol in amounts of up to 18µg/rat resulted in a rise of plasma FSH and a reciprocal fall of pituitary FSH. At higher doses the effect was reversed. There was no obvious change in hypothalamic FSH-RF content, but the injection of low doses of stilboestrol resulted in a decrease of both pituitary LH and hypothalamic LH-RF. Contrary to this no evidence could be obtained for a central effect of the ovulation-inducer epimestrol under the experimental conditions used.
