Significance

Nanocrystalline magnesium oxide-stabilized palladium(0) [NAP-Mg-Pd(0)] was found to promote the reduction of the nitro group to amine. Thus, NAP-Mg-PdCl2 was obtained from the reaction of nanocrystalline MgO with Na2PdCl4 in water and reduced with H2NNH2H2O to give NAP-Mg-Pd(0). Reduction of nitrobenzene with H2 was carried out in the presence of NAP-Mg-Pd(0) to give the aniline in 98% yield. The NAP-Mg-Pd(0) was recovered and reused five times without any loss of catalytic activity (98% yield for five times).
