Significance

Compound 1 was treated with 1 equivalent of pyrrole in propionic acid to afford 2 in 12% yield. The tetrakis(Ru) complexes 3 and 7 were synthesized by combining porphyrin 2 with 4 equivalents of the paramagnetic 5 and 6, to enhance solubility, in the presence of a catalytic amount of N-ethylmorpholine in ethylene glycol. Zinc metallation of 3 and 7 was achieved by refluxing with 1 equivalent of Zn(OAc)2 in MeOH for 3 h to give 4 and 8.
