Significance

Polypeptide-based Pd complex 1 was prepared from compound 2 in four steps. Thus, the ring-opening polymerization of 2 initiated by polyethyleneglycol-NH2 gave copolymer 3. Deprotection of 3 followed by treatment with CH2O and HPPh2 afforded polymeric ligand 4. The reaction of 4 with Pd(MeCN)4(BF4)2 yielded the polymeric Pd complex 1 which catalyzed the hydrogenation of acetophenone in water to afford 1-phenylethanol in 100% conversion. Catalyst 1 was recycled three times without loss of activity.
