Significance

Near infrared (NIR) dyes are used in photodynamic therapy for the generation of singlet oxygen. The family of compounds synthesized (oxopyridochlorins) exhibits absorption bands within the therapeutic window (750-900 nm). Studies of singlet oxygen generation give positive results for compounds 1a and 2a.
