ABSTRACT

The anatomic features of the fibular osteoseptocutaneous free flap make it a unique composite vascularized bone graft for mandibular reconstruction. Compared to other donor sites available, it is more versatile and reliable. In the last 8 years we have used this free flap consecutively in 160 cases for reconstruction of various mandibular defects under different circumstances. Familiarization with this procedure has allowed us to maximize the indications for using the fibula and to achieve good esthetic and functional results consistently.

In this paper we emphasize the multiple advantages of this surgical technique and offer a summary of our experience with this procedure.
