Activation of Nitroalkenes by Chiral Phosphoric Acids

Significance

A Brønsted acid catalyzed asymmetric Friedel-Crafts alkylation has been developed. Addition of indoles 1 to nitroalkenes 2 in the presence of 10 mol% of chiral binol phosphate 3 and 3 Å molecular sieves provides products of type 4 in high yields and enantioselectivities. The use of molecular sieves turned out to improve both the yields and enantioselectivities.
