Significance

Sphingosine is the core component of the sphingolipids, which have various appendages on the terminal hydroxy group. Sphingolipids show promising activity against cancer as they control various factors of cell growth. This synthesis excels over previous syntheses due to its brevity and the retention of high enantiopurity throughout the synthesis.
